How we work

Each investment proposal requires approval from at least fifteen of the twenty voting Council members; the proposing member does not vote, and approval does not oblige a voting member to participate financially.

The proposing member must contribute 35% of the total investment and remains responsible for monitoring the project throughout its duration.

Under the applicable internal agreements, that member personally undertakes to repay the capital contributed by the other participating members if the project fails.

Who we are

The origins of A21 lie in a partnership formed in 1924 by four business partners: two from North America, one from Great Britain and one from Australia. Within their circle, the names “The Golden Ring” and “The Golden River” were used. Their cooperation laid the foundations for relationships, experience and values passed from one generation to the next.

During the Great Depression, the four founding partners sustained their cooperation despite financial losses and went on to achieve considerable success across the sectors in which they held interests. Their resilience and commitment to one another remain a legacy that today’s A21 members regard as both an inspiration and a responsibility.

The earliest form of the shared emblem emerged in the 1950s. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, the name Aurum Group had come into use among members. Aurum is the Latin word for gold, evoking enduring value and continuity.

Around the turn of the 1960s, the group comprised twelve partners. During the period from 1974 to 1977, it had sixteen partners. Five additional partners were gradually admitted, bringing membership to twenty-one by 1993.

Membership has remained at twenty-one since 1993, and the group has used the internal designation AURUM 21 GROUP since that time. Today, members and their respective businesses are supported by a network of around 1850 collaborators who work exclusively within A21.

The twenty-one members pursue a range of business activities, including insurance and private banking. Members also include current and former senior public officials.

At the centre of the present emblem, the Chinese character 信 conveys trust and trustworthiness. Together with Fides and Integritas, it expresses a shared commitment to good faith, integrity and consistency between principles and conduct.

For members, the emblem carries a lasting responsibility: to act with respect, humility and reverence for the trust placed in them.

Aurum non clamitat.

AURUM 21 GROUP™

Three pillars

The activities described below are carried out by individual members and their respective businesses. All assets and ownership interests are held by those members or businesses. AURUM 21 GROUP is not incorporated or registered as a separate legal entity anywhere in the world.

I. International Trade & Industry

Through its members and their businesses, AURUM 21 GROUP has a global presence across energy, natural resources, agriculture, aquaculture and industry.

Members’ activities in energy and natural resources include ownership of, or equity interests in, natural gas, oil and mineral deposits, including coal, iron ore, cobalt and copper.

Members’ activities in agriculture, food and beverages include the production and trade of grain, maize, soybeans and coffee; fish and seafood farming, including salmon and lobster; and ownership or co-ownership of world-renowned breweries and bottled-water brands.

Members and their businesses buy and sell on their own account, using their own financial resources. They continue to explore new commercial activities and opportunities for long-term cooperation.

II. Investment & Ownership Interests

Members and their businesses own or hold interests in hotel networks, shopping centres in Europe and North America, selected luxury brands, sports clubs, the automotive and chemical industries, heavy industry and other sectors. This also includes ownership or co-ownership of world-renowned brands in cosmetics and clothing.

Building on a family enterprise tradition dating to 1924, they actively seek carefully selected investments and acquisitions, prioritising long-term value over expansion at any price.

For acquisitions in which they participate as investors, members and their businesses conduct discussions directly with the relevant shareholders, rather than through intermediaries. Any such acquisition must result in the largest single shareholding in the acquired business, although this need not constitute a majority where ownership is distributed among several shareholders.

Where members and their businesses do not seek direct participation, AURUM 21 GROUP may facilitate negotiations between the parties and assist them in reaching commercial agreements or completing acquisitions.

Alongside these activities, every A21 member is required to support those in need through a charitable foundation fund. This commitment encompasses assistance to children and older people, as well as support for social, cultural and other public-benefit initiatives, including the preservation of cultural heritage.

III. Banking, Insurance & Wealth

Private banking operations, wealth preservation and succession form part of members’ activities. These activities include cooperation with a major private bank owned by members or their businesses, rather than by AURUM 21 GROUP as a separate entity.

Members also own or hold interests in insurance businesses, supporting insurance arrangements for their activities. Their operations are financed from their own financial resources.

These activities do not constitute an offer by AURUM 21 GROUP to provide asset management, investment advice, fund management or any other financial service to third parties. AURUM 21 GROUP does not solicit or accept external capital.

All matters are conducted with discretion, precision and diligence. Integrity, direct relationships and a long-term perspective guide members’ business activities and cooperation.

An introduction

A trusted personal referral is the principal route to an introduction to AURUM 21 GROUP. It may arise through established relationships in private banking, leading law firms and multinational corporations, or with individuals who hold or have held distinguished positions in public life. Such relationships do not, in themselves, imply access to the Group. Each introduction is considered individually and verified through trusted channels.

An introduction establishes contact; it does not confer a mandate to act as an intermediary. Members and their businesses conduct acquisition discussions directly with the relevant shareholders. Any acquisition they undertake must result in the largest single shareholding in the acquired business, although this need not constitute a majority where ownership is distributed among several shareholders. They actively seek new opportunities, but pursue acquisitions selectively, prioritising long-term value over expansion at any price.

AURUM 21 GROUP may also initiate contact where an individual’s work, expertise or initiative offers an exceptional basis for meaningful cooperation, including contributions to environmental protection and the responsible use of natural resources. Discretion, integrity and verification through trusted relationships guide every engagement.

Any person acting on behalf of a member or their business must present a specific Power of Attorney defining the scope of their authority. Its authenticity and scope must be independently verified through a mutually agreed, trusted channel before any commitment is made.

A prospective counterparty may propose an independent referee. Any reference arrangement is subject to that person’s consent, relevant knowledge and ability to provide a meaningful assessment.
